Anke Wonneberger successfully defended her PhD thesis

On 1 December 2011, Anke Wonneberger successfully defended her PhD thesis, entitled: “Coping with diversity: Exposure to public-affairs TV in a changing viewing environment”. She collated her dissertation under the supervision of Klaus Schoenbach and Lex van Meurs.

Several news media have written about findings of the dissertation, among others: Trouw, Volkskrant, Telegraaf, Parool, several regional newspapers and teletekst. Anke Wonneberger has also been interviewed by Radio 1 (Lunch!), Radio 2 (NOS Journaal) and Radio Limburg about the increase of news exposure in the Netherlands.

Hajo Boomgaarden at University of Haifa

On 24 October Hajo Boomgaarden was invited to speak at a workshop on “What is Newsworthy? Reexamining News Criteria” sponsored by the Israeli Science Foundation. He presented research on factors explaining news news coverage of the European Union. For more information see link.

Knut De Swert defends his PhD dissertation

NWO VENI grant for Andreas Schuck

The Dutch Science Foundation (NWO) has awarded Andreas Schuck a competitive VENI grant. The 250,000 Euro grant provides funding for Andreas’ project “Dealing with feelings: The (de-)mobilizing role of emotions in political communication” over a period of three years starting January 2012. It analyses which emotions are sparked by political news coverage and how these engage or disengage citizens in politics.

Last Wednesday, Joost van Spanje was interviewed by Nieuwsuur about a recently conducted study on the effects of the trial of Dutch MP Geert Wilders on citizens’ trust in the judiciary. Hajo Boomgaarden at Roundtable on Turkey accession to the EU

The accession of Turkey is one of the most contentious issues in European politics. On Monday, June 27, Hajo Boomgaarden joined an expert panel and public debate at Viadrina European University on the role of religion for Turkish EU accession. Dr. Boomgaarden spoke about religion, party politics and public opinion regarding Turkish EU enlargement. Among the participants were former EU commissioner on enlargement Günther Verheugen and Michael Minkenberg, professor for comparative politics at Viadrina University.
