On Tuesday May 8 Linda Bos successfully defended her PhD dissertation, titled “Public Images of Right-Wing Populist Leaders: the Role of the Mass Media”. The project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Wouter van der Brug and Prof. Dr. Claes de Vreese.

Publications from the research have appeared in Political Communication, Party Politics, and Communications.

Knut De Swert in debate about crime in the media

Hajo Boomgaarden at the University of Mannheim

On April 23 Hajo Boomgaarden gave a lecture at the Mannheimer Zentrum für Europäische Sozialforschung (MZES) at the University of Mannheim. His talk was entitled “The EU on the news agenda: From negligence to all-time highs” and dealt with the prominence of EU news coverage across countries and over time

Anke Wonneberger successfully defended her PhD thesis

On 1 December 2011, Anke Wonneberger successfully defended her PhD thesis, entitled: “Coping with diversity: Exposure to public-affairs TV in a changing viewing environment”. She collated her dissertation under the supervision of Klaus Schoenbach and Lex van Meurs.

Several news media have written about findings of the dissertation, among others: Trouw, Volkskrant, Telegraaf, Parool, several regional newspapers and teletekst. Anke Wonneberger has also been interviewed by Radio 1 (Lunch!), Radio 2 (NOS Journaal) and Radio Limburg about the increase of news exposure in the Netherlands.

Sophie Lecheler was elected as Secretary for the Political Communication Division within the International Communication Association, effective at the close of the 2012 ICA Conference in Phoenix, Arizona
