Carlos Brenes

Carlos BrenesCarlos Brenes Peralta is a PhD candidate in Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). His project consists of three experimental studies testing whether narrative messages—messages that focus on an individual´s own experience with an issue—help overcome selective exposure and counter the potential polarizing effects of news exposure more succesfully than base-rate messages, which focus on factual information and numeric data on the issue.

Before joining ASCoR, Carlos obtained Bachelor and Licentiate degrees in Psychology at the University of Costa Rica. Afterwards, he worked as a Media Psychologist in Costa Rica doing academic research, applying Media Psychology in the Mental Health sector, and doing action research at a national NGO in collaboration with the Costa Rican government, civil society and private sector. In 2013, Carlos obtained a Masters degree in Social Research with a focus oCommunication Science at VU University Amsterdam. At the VU, Carlos focused his Masters research on the effects of news media exposure on climate change beliefs and behaviors.
