A bottom-up cure for misinformation? Understanding the potential of citizen corrections to instill resilience against misinformation

PhD Candidate: Ambika Ahuja

My PhD project explores how citizens can be empowered to play an active role in combating misinformation through online corrections. While much research focuses on detecting or debunking misinformation, little is know about what motivates individuals to actively engage in corrective behavior. The project addresses this gap by examining the psychological motivations, social dynamics and contextual factors that influence citizens willingness to correct misinformation online. Through a combination of large-scale empirical analyses, content analysis, in-depth interviews and experimental research, it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of both the nature of misinformation circulating online and the mechanisms that encourage corrective engagement.
