Are we too concerned about misinformation? Exploring how public opinion, political communication, and (social) media contribute to (dis)proportional threat perceptions of misinformation

PhD Candidate: Ellen Linnert

The main objective of this PhD project is to explore the causes of the discrepancy between perceived misinformation and salient threat frames on the one hand and the low observed misinformation exposure on the other hand. More specifically, we investigate what types of threats citizens associate with misinformation, how such perceptions vary between individuals or over time, and which roles media and elite discourses play in shaping these threat perceptions. Throughout the project, we will use an array of qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods. This PhD project is part of the Amsterdam School of Communication Research’s (ASCoR) Mis- and Disinformation Initiative.
