Associate Professor
Dr Gattermann is Associate Professor in Political Communication and Journalism at ASCoR. She is also co-leader of the research theme “The Future of European Democracy” at the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES).
She is currently member of the executive board of the 2024 European Election Study and member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Political Research. She also collaborates within the European-wide research project Campaigning for Strasbourg (CamforS) and is co-editing the Oxford Handbook on Personality Politics which is under contract with Oxford University Press.
Her work addresses questions that concern the relationship between representatives and represented, and particularly the linking role of the media in that relationship, and thereby feeds into debates about the legitimacy and accountability of politics. She is currently leading a research project on “And the winner is…. !? The battle for the most impactful framing of election results between media and politics in multi-party systems” (NWO). Her publications have appeared journals such as the European Journal of Political Research, European Union Politics, the International Journal of Press/Politics, the Journal of European Public Policy, and West European Politics. Her recent book is The personalization of politics in the European Union (OUP, 2022).
