From News Choice to Misbelief: Exploring the Role of Selective News Exposure in a (Mis)Informed Society using Online Web-Tracking

This project investigates how selective news exposure contributes to public misbeliefs in the Netherlands. In an era where media choices are abundant and misinformation is widespread, larger groups of citizens solely consume news that align with their political views, potentially fostering misbeliefs. This project employs an innovative methodology combining web-tracking data and a two-wave panel survey to analyse individuals’ online news diets. By examining both direct and indirect effects of selective exposure on misbeliefs across various topics, it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms behind the formation of misbeliefs in a diverse media environment.
