Richard van der Wurff (PhD) is researcher at The Amsterdam School of Communications Research ASCoR of the University of Amsterdam. His main research interest is the diversity and quality of news, both off- and online. Current projects focus on the diversity of climate change news in different European countries, and the impact of news quality on news users’ understanding of different political viewpoints and debates. Previous studies investigated with audience expectations of news media and journalists, the impact of journalistic values and self-regulation on news quality, the added value of online newspapers, and the economics of (online) news.
He has MA (cum laude) and PhD degrees in International Relations at the University of Amsterdam. He worked as a visiting scholar for the Technology Forecasting Unit of the European Commission, coordinated a European COST research network on the impact of the internet on newspapers, conducted studies for the Media Ombudsman Foundation, the Dutch Press Fund, and the Dutch Publishers Association, and served as advisor to the Dutch Media Authority.
