Unraveling the Threads of Threat: How Societal Threats are Perceived, Politicized, Emotionally Processed, and Coped With

PhD Candidate: Linda C. Bomm

In my PhD, I investigate how societal threats are perceived, related to political ideology, and how citizens cope with societal threats and the emotions these issues evoke.
In the first two projects, we 1.) explore how societal threat perceptions are structured, related to political ideology, socio-demographics, and news consumption, and evolve over time, and 2.) assess measurements of societal threat.
In other projects, we investigate how citizens cope with a range of societal threats – e.g., climate change and immigration – and regulate the emotions these threats elicit, and how different coping strategies relate to socio-political attitudes and behaviors.
